Grand Rapids was the location of the first-ever Fray Day proposal. Congrats, Aaron!

Coming soon: Fray Day 5! This year we came to San Francisco and Grand Rapids. Next year we want to come to your town! Are you interested in helping to create a Fray Day in your city? It's a lot of work and doesn't earn much money, but it's a ton of fun. If you're interested in organizing Fray Day 5 in your town, or just lending some support, please write us and say where you live and how you'd like to participate.
Derek {9/25/2000 7:36:49 PM}
Shoutouts! Big huge giant thanks go out to the following people for helping to make Fray Day 4 the best ever:
Shmuel Mikel - A million thanks for organizing the first-ever Fray Day to take place outside of San Francisco. It was a dream come true.
Matt Haughey - Webcam master.
Patrick Mahoney and Jack Moffitt of Icecast - MP3 webcast.
Steve Blood of Punctuate - Rapid fire t-shirt maker.
Heather Champ - The photo sticker booth project, badge lamination, and so much more.
Tarin Towers - Performer and open mic emcee.
Jed Reynolds - Sound man extraordinaire.
Roz Jaeger - T-shirt queen and mapmaker.
Maggie Powers - Mirror box constructor and performer.
Julian Axolotl - Can't wait to see your photos!
Soapbox - Rockin the house.
Apollo - Help with cleanup (above and beyond the call) and official Fray Day bus.
Gerry - Thanks for trusting us with your photo sticker booth (and all your help in getting it running smoothly). Glad we found it a good home!
And to all the performers, open mic participants, spontaneous volunteers, and attendees: Thank you! You made Fray Day what it is.

The results of Heather's interactive art project, the Photo Sticter Booth, are online already! Go Heather!

Fray Day remembrances wanted! Did you attend FD4 in San Francisco or Grand Rapids? We wanna hear about it. Please email us with stories of your experience. Did you take photos? Scan 'em! If you came to Fray Day SF and got a badge and covered it in stickers, send us a scan. Or, better yet, just put your thoughts and images online and send us the url (permanent urls, please). We want to compile a master list of Fray Day remembrances, so please send in those stories and urls. Thanks!

It's Saturday afternoon and I am returning dishes to the caterer, shuttling the sound system back to it's home, and catching my breath. Fray Day 4 GR is over. It was wonderful! Everyone had such wonderful stories and Aaron got engaged! Like Derek I am a little on the tired side but I couldn't be more happy with the way everything went.
Coming soon to this website: audio, wishes, and more. Thanks Fray GR'ers for making this event a wonderful experience.
Shmuel {9/23/2000 2:12:44 PM}
FD4 is history! It's Saturday morning. My voice is sore, my body tired, and my face is smiling. Still.
Fray Day 4 SF was amazing. We had more people this year than ever (over 200, from as far away as Ireland, Germany, and Australia). Better performances than ever (a three-word recipe for open mic success: John Halcyon Styn). And wonderful interactive art projects (Heather's photo sticker booth had a line all evening).
My only regret was that we ran too long and couldn't get all the open mic signups on stage. To the half-dozen folks we couldn't get in: I'm so sorry. Show up next year and you'll be first on the list.
Otherwise, the event was a smash! Stay tuned to fray.org for photos, stories, and audio fron the event. I'll be posting stuff in the next few days.
Thanks to everyone who made Fray Day a reality!

Looking for Fray Day SF but don't know where it is? It's at Cellspace: 2050 Bryant St., between 18th and 19th. Here's a map.
Derek {9/22/2000 10:31:31 AM}
Tonight is Fray Day! All the good stuff will be happening here.
Derek {9/22/2000 1:33:14 AM}
After doing the open mic at Fray Day for the last few years, we've seen just about everything. This year we cobbled together a short list of guidelines to help first time (and returning) performers. If you're thinking of participating in the open mic (and we hope you are), check 'em out.
Derek {9/20/2000 11:05:39 PM}
Can't make it to San Francisco this Friday? Listen to the webcast! That's right, we'll be streaming the audio from Fray Day SF to the world, thanks to the nice folks at Icecast. If you wanna tune in, make sure you have an app that can play streamed mp3 audio (like Winamp for Windows or Macast for the Mac).
Derek {9/20/2000 6:12:12 PM}
Thanks to some quick work by the fine folks at Punctuate, it looks like we're going to be selling some very limited edition FD4 t-shirts at Fray Day SF and GR. These shirts will not be sold online, and will probably run out fast, so show up early if you want one!
Derek {9/19/2000 11:57:17 PM}
If you want a taste of what you're gonna hear at Fray Day this Friday, crank up your speakers and tune into the realaudio from last year's open mic. (3 hours, 18 minutes, baby!)
Derek {9/18/2000 7:24:11 PM}
Hey Michigan folks - I am writing for your help. David G. is a student at U of M and is looking for a ride into Grand Rapids for fray day. Can anyone help the lad out (Mike Zeddies?). Please email him or jot me a note. Thanks in advance for your help. (Ed note: You do need a ride to enjoy fray day!)
Anyone else coming to Fray Day GR from out of town, let me know if you need help finding accommodations or rides. I will do my best to help.
Shmuel {9/17/2000 7:10:44 PM}
Great news! Fray Day SF will be rocked by local band Soapbox! They're scheduled to go on at 8pm sharp, so show up early to catch their unique sound ("Country Kraftwerk" is what front man Schlomo calls it).
Derek {9/15/2000 12:07:30 PM}
Coming from out of town to fray day San Francisco? Be sure to hang around the next day. We're gonna be rocking out.
Derek {9/13/2000 6:04:09 PM}
Heather is preparing an interactive art project for Fray Day SF the photo sticker booth! Are you quick with photoshop? If so, you can help!
Derek {9/11/2000 2:44:54 PM}
Two weeks until fray day! I totally can't wait. Until then, you can get a taste of Scott LePera's open mic material now (in tastey mp3 format). Sounds great, Scott!
Derek {9/8/2000 2:05:04 PM}
It looks like Nicholas lost his date for fray day SF. Interested? (Ed note: You don't need a date to enjoy fray day!)
Derek {9/7/2000 6:17:08 PM}
Looking for an easy way to help out? Here's your chance. We've created two posters that you can print and plaster all over your local telephone poles and coffee shop bulletin boards. All you need is a copy of Adobe Acrobat, a printer, and reams of paper. (Special thanks to Paul Hart for kerning, perfecting, and pdf'ing help.)
Here are the files (pick your favorite format):
Fray Day San Francisco:
{.pdf} 230k {.sit} 199k {.zip} 199k
Fray Day Grand Rapids:
{.pdf} 230k {.sit} 199k {.zip} 199k
If you're not sure, download a .pdf file. And if you just get a page full of strange characters, you'll have to right-click on the link (or, on a mac, click and hold) and select "save link as source" or "download link to disk" or something like that.
Thanks for helping us get the word out!
Shmuel {8/22/2000 12:12:48 PM}
Are you coming to Fray day? Tell us so! (Super huge thanks to Shmuel for the quick cgi work!)
Derek {8/20/2000 6:10:55 PM}
More great news: {fray} contributor Tarin Towers has signed on to emcee the open mic portion of Fray Day SF, as well as treat us to an extended performance of her new work.
Derek {8/16/2000 3:35:39 PM}
It's official! I signed the papers, I wrote the check. Cellspace is ours for the SF event.
Derek {8/16/2000 2:17:16 PM}
Thanks to the ever talented Greg Knauss, we have a press release! In an effort to make sure that everyone on earth has an opportunity to participate in a fray day, we have released two press releases. One is intended for regional coverage in Michigan the other is for every place else. If you write for your college news paper, work at Wired News, or happen to know someone in the media, please pass our little announcement on.
Thanks for your help. Together we can make this the coolest fray day yet.
Shmuel {8/15/2000 7:16:36 PM}
Thanks Derek! Hello everyone. I am happy to announce that fray day 4 will be the first muli-geographic web birthday bash Grand Rapids, Michigan has ever hosted. We'll kick everything off on 8pm EST Friday, September 22 and wrap up at twelve midnight. All the storytelling will take place at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA). They have also been gracious enough to sponsor the event. Grand Rapids is about a three hour drive from both Chicago and Detroit so we hope to see people from all over the midwest including YOU! I'll post more details as they become available but feel free to email me with any questions you have. I am so excited to hear your stories!
For fray day GR,
Shmuel {8/5/2000 3:16:42 PM}
Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to Shmuel Mikel, the man in charge of Fray Day in Grand Rapids. He'll be posting here over the next few weeks with updates on Fray Day GR. Welcome, Shmuel!
Derek {8/2/2000 1:03:23 PM}
Interesting development: There is a good possibility that there may be a fray day event taking place on the same night as the San Francisco event, but in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Are you in that area? Would you go to such an event? Please lemme know asap!
Derek {7/30/2000 11:44:46 PM}
Rumor has it that Julian may be at fray day with his camera. If you're unfamiliar with his work, check out his shots from Webzine 2000 they're amazing. I'm crossing my fingers.
Derek {7/29/2000 8:20:41 PM}
Looks like we may have some trombonists at fray day (check the bottom of the page). Cool!
Derek {7/29/2000 8:12:30 PM}
Reminder: Submissions for interactive art exhibits are now being accepted. Art projects should invite participation and may have an online component. For examples, check out Fray Libs and The House from last year. Short videos and performance pieces will also be considered. If you'd like to submit an art project, please email info@fray.org and be sure to include your name, phone number, and a description of the project. Do it today space is filling up!
Derek {7/27/2000 12:41:32 AM}

The cards are here! Woo! Want some? Just ask! (Bay Area only ... unless you're planning on flying out!)
Derek {7/21/2000 2:02:09 PM}
If you're interested in fray day, you might also dig Webzine 2000, happening at Cell this Saturday. I'll be there!
Derek {7/17/2000 7:38:18 PM}
Today I ordered 500 pretty fray day four cards. They're 4x6 on poscard stock, color on the front and black and white on the back. Wanna see? In the coming weeks I'm going to be looking for people in SF to help me distribute cards and put up flyers. If you'd like to lend a hand, please drop me a line and be sure to say which areas are most convenient for you. Thanks!
Derek {7/14/2000 6:03:40 PM}
Remember: fray day is a participatory event. Get involved!
Derek {7/12/2000 11:48:57 PM}
