Fray Day FAQ
Got a question about the way Fray Day works? Post it here!
Here are a few to get us started:
How early should I show up to sign up for the open mic?
Try to arrive as early as possible. We usually only take open mic signups for the first hour, and only after that if there's time.
What's the schedule?
For the SF event, here's a rough schedule: 7-8: People arrive and play with interactive art 8-9:30: Featured performers 9:30-10: Music by the Walkingbirds 10-12: Open mic!
Other events will follow the same basic pattern (featured performers, then open mic).
Are people encouraged to do this without notes?
YES! Though, if you have to read from notes, we promise not to mock you.
This is intended to be a Storytelling Performance - not a literary reading. Storytelling is more than just spitting words out of your mouth - it's about engaging the audience, and it's hard to do that if you've got your nose stuck in a stack of paper.
But don't worry! It's a very supportive environment. People usually feel very confortable.

Q: What happened to Fray Day in London?
Jo Finney 17 AUG 01 // 5:13AM
A: We had a couple locations drop out, unfortunately. London, Washington DC, and Toronto all ran into trouble for various reasons (couldn't find a venue, personal stuff, etc.), though there is a movement to bring the DC event back to life. Cross your fingers!

Here's the breakdown for the LA event, for anyone who's curious:
7-8: People arrive, Shana Susman plays her set, mingle and play with the interactive art.
8-9:30: Featured performers. (Now fully booked!)
9:30-10: Intermission (again, mingle and play with the interactive art).
10-12: Open mic!
And remember, the LA event is on the 9th. I'm sure the Un-Urban would appreciate your patronage on the 8th, but we won't be there!

Here's a question someone's bound to ask: how much does it cost to get in?
(By the way, the LA event is free.)
Mike 18 AUG 01 // 8:52AM
The SF event is 5-10 bucks, sliding scale. This is to help us pay for the space, snacks, and flyers.

I didn't see any info posted and I was wondering if there are any plans to webcast any of the fray day 5 events this year. (I really enjoyed being able to "attend" fray day 4 SF even though I was trapped on the east coast)
Jim Wegman 23 AUG 01 // 8:08AM
Yes! I've just heard back from the good folks at Live 365 who are going to webcast the SF event!
Other events? You tell us!

is there an age issue? i mean, would i be allowed to bring my children?
elizabeth 1 SEP 01 // 10:30PM
Speaking for the SF event, children would be totally welcome, so long as the parent is okay with some possible foul language and adult themes. To get a feel for the material, giive a listen to the webcast from last year in real audio or streaming mp3.

Are there any plans to bring Fray Day to Atlanta? It would be an awesome event for the ATL.
Jenna 6 SEP 01 // 8:26PM
All the events are organized by volunteers. So round up some friends and YOU could be in charge of Fray Day 6 in Atlanta next year!

Is there any way for us wee folk to exchange the L shirt that we received at Fray Day for a M? I'd like to be able to wear mine out in public yet not look like a bag of potatoes?

Stef - I know Mike in LA has some extras. Maybe you two could work something out?
Derek-SF 19 SEP 01 // 11:19PM
When and where will fray day take place this year, 2002-2003 calendar?
Can I bring elementary school students to this event?
Rebecca 18 JUN 02 // 8:22AM
Fray Day 6 will take place on September 13, 14, and 15 in cities all over the world. Fray Days are open to all ages, but the personal stories can be pretty frank sometimes, so I'm not sure elementary school students would really get it.
Derek 18 JUN 02 // 10:07AM
im surprised theres no event in NYC. any reasons?
chris 7 SEP 02 // 1:43PM
Simple - no one there has volunteered to run one yet! You stepping up?
