Los Angeles News

Photos

Here are a few selected photos from Fray Day LA that I've posted on my site. All photos by storyteller and entertainment journalist Melissa Lee.... More coming soon.

Storytelling Lives in LA!

I am very pleased by the way Fray Day LA ran. The featured performers all gave wonderful performances, followed by a very solid open mic.... Regardless of what you find being offered on TV and in your local movie theatres, storytelling is alive and well in Los Angeles. Thanks to all who performed, helped and watched. Photos will be coming soon.

Lobby Opens at 6:30

We'll be "meeting and greeting" starting at 6:30. There will be refreshments, interactive art and the open mic sign-up sheet. Please arrive early since we plan on starting the featured part of the show shortly after 7.... Also, if you have a digital camera and would like to use it, please bring it along. Thanks.

Fray Author Added

I am pleased to announce that {fray} author Adam Rakunas has been added to our list of featured performers. You can learn more about Adam here.

Boob Tube Bios

Here are two more bios from a couple of people (who also happen to be a couple) that you might recognize from the boob tube.

Moira Quirk has been an essayist on KPFK, is the co-host of Nickelodeon's GUTS and Global GUTS now playing on Nickelodeon Games and Sports and is the voice of Jane in The Wild Thornberrys animation feature to be released this Christmas. She and Michael Rayner perform in Domestic Bliss and Vaudeville and also the late night FUNOPOLIS, a variety show at the Whitmore-Lindley every Saturday commencing September 21st.

Michael Rayner is a performer of oddball feats of skill and eccentric patter. His antics have been seen on David Letterman, ESPN, Sesame Street, Nickelodeon and a variety of commercials. He and Moira Quirk perform in Domestic Bliss and Vaudeville and also the late night FUNOPOLIS, a variety show at the Whitmore-Lindley Theatre every Saturday commencing September 21st

The Art Coalition, who'll be helping with the interactive art for Fray Day, is having an art opening on Saturday, September 14th. Along with the art and wine, they have offered to let Fray Day Featured Performers give a sneak preview of Sunday's event.

Saturday, September 14th
Fray Day Sneak Preview
"Inside, Outside and On the Air"

Featured performers from the international storytelling festival Fray Day present a variety of stories throughout the day. Sidewalk Stories begin at 6pm, inside after 8pm.

Scheduled to perform include: Lance Anderson, Dan Farren, Marti MacGibbon, Beverly Mickins and surprise guests.

Bios Take Three

Here are a couple of more bios of our featured performers.... Clay and Dan are two of the most interesting and offbeat performers you'll ever hear tell a story.

Clay Bravo was voted " Most Likely to Look Like the Cowardly Lion" by her high school theatre arts class. Propelled by that accolade, she did nothing for many years…. Then one night at a local club, she "accidentally" opened for Drew Carey, which led to a five-year stint as a stand up comedienne, performing at the Ice House, Catch a Rising Star, and the Comedy Store in a weekly show titled "Women in Comedy Who Don't Have Their Own Series.... Yet." She has worked with Directors Tony Scott and Christopher Guest, co-starred in several independent films and been featured in many national Commercials. Most notably, an award winning Campbell's Soup Spot, which was featured on the Rosie O'Donnell Show, Clay played a foster mother who welcomes her new "daughter" with the same kind of soup that the little girl's mother used to make her…. In real life, as a child, the smell of clay's mother's soup, made her run from the house screaming.

Dan Tirman has been enjoying contributing to the weekly performances at Beverly Mickins’ "Story Salon". While teaching English as a Second Language at several colleges, including Moscow University in Russia, Dan shared many stories and anecdotes with his wonderful students. As an actor at the Burt Reynolds Theater in Florida, Dan trained with Jose Quintero and Charles Nelson Reilly, appeared in several productions, and created and directed two original works; "The Dorothy Parker 20th Century Blues Review" and "Baudelaire:Get Drunk". This September, at the James Whitmore Theater, Dan premieres "I Live Lucy", his first one-person show.

More Bios

Here are the bios of two of the best storytellers in this crazy town.

Dan Farren has been a regular on the stand-up comedy circuit for several years, having appeared at the Ice House Annex, the Comedy Store, the Irvine Improv and a whole bunch of places with a brick wall. His TV appearances include VH1, the Game Show Network, To Tell the Truth and NBC's Secrets of Pro Wrestling Exposed (he can't tell you who he was, because then it wouldn't be a secret). Farren has had articles, plays and stories published in a variety of mediums and with his writing-producing partner Shari Becker, was the co-author of Underwhere?, one of the hits of this years Los Angeles Playwright's Express Festival. A regular at Beverly Mickin's Story Salon, Dan is making his theatrical debut Sept. 22nd when his one person storytelling show, What Does Not Kill Me, Hurts For A Real Long Time, debuts at the Whitmore-Lindley Theatre in North Hollywood.

Marti MacGibbon began doing standup comedy in Houston, Texas, while working in the oilfield there---setting off explosives, staking oil wells, etc. She has performed in comedy clubs all over the country and has appeared with the likes of Bill Hicks, Brett Butler, Sam Kinison, Mark Schiff and Gary Shandling. She has opened for such recording artists as Primus, Journey and the Doobie Brothers. Marti will also be performing her one woman show, Men and Mayhem at the Whitmore-Lindley Theatre in North Hollywood.

Daveen Music

The ultra-fabulous Daveen, will be providing the evening’s transition music and performing a few songs on her accordion. An accomplished pianist and songwriter, Daveen will play her accordion because its fun, and she likes to. Learn more about Daveen here.

First Wave of Featured Bios

Here's a taste of who you'll hear tell stories at this year's FD6LA:

Steven-Elliot Altman considers himself a “storyteller” and finds himself equally at home writing novels, screenplays or advertising campaigns. He recently created a literary anthology called THE TOUCH, which was a WRITE AID project to benefit both AIDS and Cancer charities and it received rave reviews from both Publisher’s Weekly and Asimov’s Science Fiction. Go figure. His latest novel, DEPRIVERS, due out from Putnam, regards a recently uncovered medical epidemic called Sensory Deprivation Syndrome, where those infected can render you blind or deaf by making simple skin-on-skin contact. His website is www.deprivers.com and he gives a shout out to Fray for being the one of the few places where stories come to LIVE!

Juliet Curry, who is excited to join "the Fray", has performed in LA, Chicago and around the world with a variety of groups and shows, including The Second City, ComedySportz, Improv Olympic and the critically acclaimed shows of Boom Chicago (based in Amsterdam!) Juliet currently performs every week in "Powerbox", at Improv Olympic. She is also busy writing and performing her real-life stories, including a piece that is a part of the solo show "Deflowered," which has been performed in theaters and festivals around LA.

Paul Jacek received his training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts/West. He is one of the Founders of Nobody's Fools Improv Group in Long Beach one of the Founders of the Gay and Lesbian Comedy Night at the Comedy Store on Sunset Blvd. Jacek’s one-man-show "Secrets of a Beverly Hills Shampoo Boy" ran for a year at Masquer's Cabaret. My new show "Tray Tables Up! My Walk in the Clouds" will open at the Whitmore/Lindley Theatre, September 22-November 17. This is my second appearance with Fray! and so excited about it....
