A big thanks to all the people who participated in the interactive art, I am still working on the people font, but here is a sample to give you an idea of what its all about!

Soon I will have the entire alphabet up and link it from here so you can play with your own words! I have some photos from the night up here. Not my usually quality, but I was so excited, how could I keep the camera still?!?

A videotape was made of the DC event and as I understand it, its being edited and cut to dvd, watch the site for clips and info!

is it over already?

it was a fabulous night at fray day 6 dc, not even a tropical storm could stop us, and it was all captured live on video so watch for updates. i wanted to get the word out how much we appreciated our featured performers, maura and kelowna, and let us give a huge shout out to the volunteers who got us out of our venue on time and without a mess!

for anyone who couldn't make it or those who did, but forgot to pick up a t-shirt, i still have 2 x-large and 7 large t-shirts left. you can purchase those through the link below. thanks in advance!

signing up for the open mic? want to know more about it?
see open mic guidelines below!
see you all tonight!

Part of what makes Fray Day special is that YOU are invited to tell your story in the open mic. If you're interested in signing up, read on....

how it works

To sign up for the open mic, come early. Signups will be taken between 7 and 8pm, after that, you will need to find Scully, our emcee to sign up.

Open mic storytellers will be brought onstage throughout the evening - not just at the end like in previous years. So if you sign up, stick around!

Open mic slots are five minutes long - no more. So you might want to practice with a timer before the event. Please be considerate of your fellow performers! Our goal is to give as many people a chance to get onstage as possible.

open mic guidelines

The goal of the Fray Day open microphone is to create a safe space where people feel comfortable telling their stories. Here are some tips to make your performance the best it can be.

1 Be personal.
Fray Day is all about personal stories. As long as you're speaking from the heart, what you say will be welcomed. You don't have to be funny and you don't have to be serious (though you can be either, or both, if you want). You just have to be yourself. Easy, right?

2 Be true.
We've got nothing against fiction, but that's not what Fray Day is about. It's expected that the story you tell will be something that really happened to you.

3 Don't talk about the web!
This is about storytelling in Real Life. We all know what it's like to be on the web. Tell us what it's like to be in your shoes.

4 No rants.
Got an axe to grind? Do it in the garage. This is a place for stories, not kvetches.

5 Five minutes.
We're asking everyone to tell their story in under five minutes. But don't worry, five minutes is longer than you think. Just take your time and tell your story. You'll be fine as long as you stay on topic. If you see the emcee looking at you and tapping their watch, wrap it up quick. You'll only get one warning before we pull the plug.

6 Get into it!
Try to avoid the words like "um, uh, well, yeah." Be confident – no one else knows the story you're about to tell as well as you do, so own it! Have energy. Resist the urge to stare at your feet, no matter how interesting they may seem. And above all, enjoy yourself! If you're having fun, so is everybody else.

Anticipation Growing in DC

We are in the home stretch now for Fray Day 6 DC! We are proud to announce that Maura Johnston and Kelowna Vincent will be featured storytellers.

We have some pretty cool interactive art projects in mind but can always use more ideas if you have them to offer! We look forward to seeing you all on Saturday night to make the first Fray DC event a huge success!

Call for Volunteers

Fray Day DC is fast approaching. We've got a venue. We've got an MC. Now all we need are volunteers. We need folks to set up, clean up, work the concessions booth, and work the door. If you'd like to help out, please contact Michael and me at fray@ratbastard.org. Thanks!

Venue Announced

Fray Day DC will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2002 at the Lyceum in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Doors open at 8:00 pm. The Lyceum is a gorgeous Greek Revival building that was erected in 1839 as a library and cultural gathering place.

The Lyceum is located at 201 South Washington Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
