Guam News

Wow!

An amazingly nice writeup of Fray Day 6 Guam in Pika. Alex Djalali makes the event sound really special and unique.

Pictures from Paradise

Someone in our audience took some Fray Day 6 Guam pics.

I was able to get one. One! Ugh :-P

Frayed...

Well, Fray Day 6 Guam has been over for about 15 hours now, and I'm still feeling the effects: still hearing the storytellers in my mind, still seeing all the images of last night, still have a headache :-) ...read on...

Now that it's over, all I can do is laugh about what went wrong yesterday.

It started when I woke up. I felt nausious and tired, from not getting enough sleep, and from being nervous about, well.. everything...

For the past week, our printer had been giving me the run around about the t-shirts. First he said that they would be ready on Friday. Come Friday, they "would be ready Saturday morning." Come Saturday, they "would be ready Saturday afternoon." I had knots in my stomache until 5:45pm, when the delivery guy finally showed up.

About that time, we got all of our interactive art pieces set up. All of which were well received, I should add. I was surpised to see how into it people were. destruction/recreation was the favorite of the evening though. Everyone got to write something on a plate, smash it up, then use the pieces to build something new. On the downside, it was a loud piece, and caught some people of guard at first. After the emcee explained what the noise was, everyone seemed to just block it out so that they could pay attention to the open mic. We were blessed with a captive audience!

Our videographer showed up late, and the English building lights didn't come on until about 7:30, but everyone I talked to said they really enjoyed the evening, regardless of what whatever imperfections I worried about. I couldn't worry about anything for very intensly or for very long periods of time, though. It was too exhausting. I was even more nausious and sick as the night wore on. I couldn't take pictures, or play with interactive arts. I couldn't eat. I could hardly stand up to do interviews with reporters. Even just talking took a lot out of me. So it didn't bother me that we ended early because we only at 6 signups for open mic. I was also relieved for my crew... they had been at the atrium since 12. However, what we lacked in quantity, the storytellers made up for in quality. We had a small crowd (40 people at our peak), but all eyes were on the performers for the most part.

It may sound like I have this whole sad story of how badly everything went, but if you could see my face right now. smiling because I think I just got why everyone enjoyed themselves, and why people said that having no lights was "cool." It wasn't about everything being perfect... it was about just getting those people together to tell their stories. If I hadn't been sick, I would have been running around all last night, and would have missed most of the stories, and I would have missed the point of Fray Day in the first place.

After we closed, we broke down equipment, etc., and someone convinced me to break a plate at the destruction/creation table.

My plate actually sparked the first time I hit it. Can you guess what I wrote on it?

Front Page News

Fray Day 6 Guam made the front page of the Entertainment section of the Pacific Daily News. PIKA wrote a short but sweet article on Fray Day 6 Guam. Gotta love mis-quotes. Gotta love free publicity even more.

We were also written up in a couple other publications, but neither of them have websites.

Flyers, four kinds

Fray Day 6 GuamFlyers for Fray Day 6 Guam can be found at www.pinkstar.org/fray/. Print them up and pass them out! Send them to your friends! Just 4 days and counting (Guam time) until the big event.

Venue announcement!

Fray Day Guam will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2002, at the University of Guam English building atrium. Doors open at 6pm. Opening band, GasCap starts at 6.30pm. Storytelling starts at 7pm.

Refreshments will be available, but feel free to bring your own food. And because the atrium sort of outdoors, please feel free to bring your own chair or picnic blanket.

Most importantly, bring your stories! (We're still looking for featured artists.. email us!)

Interactive arts ideas include:

the big black box (Where Were You?) - Alan Jackson wrote a heartfelt song last year, based on the events of September 11, titled "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)" that inspired this interactive piece. A year later, most of us can still remember what we were doing at the exact moment we heard the news of the attacks. We invite you to step inside the big black box, lined with a map of the world, and pin your story up on your exact location on that tragic day. Where were you?

Creation/Destruction OR Destruction/Creation - create something and then destroy it. Rebuild it with others and their destroyed creations.

the bulletin board - For sale, meeting next Tuesday, roommate wanted, Jesus loves me. Post your announcement on our bulletin board, or take one with you. A mini-exhibit on cork board.

the refrigerator door - Do you remember when your mom used to post your crayola drawing or gold star on the fridge? do you enjoy magnetic poetry or adorning your fridge with pictures and momentos? Stop by our Fray Day fridge and add your gold star or momento, for the whole Fray family to see.

And The Electric Danish is scheduled as our intermission band.

We'll post more info as we think of it!
