People are talking

People are talking about Fray Cafe 3! Read on for some choice comments and links to photos of the event from around the web.

"It was my first time at Fray, and it was quite enjoyable. I didn't stay too long, but managed to catch some amazing stories. There was lots of laughing, some singing, and several quite strong drinks." –Karen

"I never really liked A Prairie Home Companion on public radio. I tried to like it. But, it never worked out for me. It's not funny. Some of the music is ok. For the most part though, I find it rather dull. But now, there is Fray Cafe. Words, music, laughter and ideas really come home at a Fray event. Here's to Derek Powazek, for being the new Garrison Keillor." –Robert
(Robert, this is possibly the coolest thing anyone's ever said about me. Thanks. –Derek)

"Fray Cafe was fun, but I think they should keep it to less than 5 hours." –Wesley Felter
(Note to Wes: It was under four, actually. With an intermission!)

"I told the story of giving birth to the first child. I think being pregnant while telling the story gave it more impact especially when I told everyone to imagine my being TWO more months pregnant. I ain't small! To start, I asked how many had children... maybe five to ten percent of hands went up. Then, I asked how many wanted children... only a few more hands went up. Ooh, I was in for it... about to scare these people out of wanting kids unless those guys don't tell the pregnant woman the story... On the bright side! Birth #2 went smoothly without a hitch. That story would be boring to share." –Meryl Evans

"Telling true stories can be harder than telling made-up ones; telling true stories about yourself can be harder than telling them about other people." –Michael Wasylik

"Highlights: Derek Powazek's story of a self-inflicted stab wound, Tarin Towers' slamming story about sex and lots of it, Scott Andrew LePera's song stylings, Ben Brown's dad beating up Batman, and Meryl Evans (pictured) recalling the birth of her first child as she's about to give birth to her third. Still more highlights: A bar that served both Shiner and Newcastle Brown on tap. Put a mattress on the pool table and I could live there.." –Brad Graham
(Brad also posted the story he read: Falling in Love with a Poor Man.)

"So welcome to the Fray, I hope you're having fun / Just a few more moments and my song will be done / An' if you don't like my song, then I guess you're outta luck / An' it doesn't really matter, 'cause now Ernie's gonna give me twenty bucks." –Scott Andrew LePera
(Check out Scott Andrew's site for lyrics and mp3s of the songs he performed.)

After my first time onstage at a Fray event, I'm hooked. I'm going to do it again - now I just have to start living some stories.

I'm already working on my story for next year. Hopefully my son *won't* give me more experiences to add to the TeenNudies.com tale before then. Unfortunately, I expect that he will.

Almost forgot to mention Jessajune's photos!

Also, Austin fray organizer Michael Brown has some pics up. The fray ones start at:

Tut tut, Derek... still can't spell my name.
RACISM!

*sob*

Yeah, with a name like "Powazek" you'd think I'd be more sensitive. Anyway, it's fixed. Thanks for putting your pics online, MIN JUNG KIM.

Man, I'm probably an old Fray fuddy duddy by now but I still have such a great time at each one. Great job Derek. Great job everyone!

I finally got my pictures up! The Fray pics start at http://www.booboolina.com/photos/2003/03/sxsw/sunday/index27.html.
